Up Close
and Personal
What makes someone love their job? This is a question
at the core of employee engagement conversations,
and naturally, the answer depends on the person.
The new world of employee engagement is much
more personal than Ping-Pong tables in a hip office environment
(to beat that example to death). In this issue’s cover story, we
explore a new era of employee engagement, speaking to a num-ber
of leading Canadian organizations who feel they are getting it
right. That article starts on page 16.
To further that conversation, our supplementary features focus
on additional personal connections that employers can give their
employees. We have a piece on corporate social responsibility as an
engagement driver (page 22), and Dr. John Izzo, together with one
of his colleagues, Dr. Jeff Vanderwielen, penned an article based
on the premise of their upcoming book, The Purpose Revolution:
How Leaders Create Engagement and Competitive Advantage in an
Age of Social Good. Dr. Izzo was a keynote speaker at the HRPA
Annual Conference & Trade Show 2018, and it was the first time
– after five years attending this event – that I immediately pur-chased
a speaker’s book after the presentation to have it signed by
its author. During his keynote, Dr. Izzo said, “You get exactly the
kind of ambassadorship you deserve from your employees,” and
that really resonated with me. Read that article on page 26, and
learn four practices focused on social good and purpose that can
help you win the war for top talent.
Shifting gears, I’ve received an influx of emails recently from
people wondering how to publish an article in HR Professional. If
you’ve ever wondered what the process is, click here to read the
2018 editorial calendar and submission guidelines. I look forward
to hearing from you!
I hope that you enjoy this issue of HR Professional, and please
be sure to follow us on LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook. We’ll be
back in April to discuss “The Business of People.”
Happy reading,
Jill Harris n
