At the company, one program employees have responded positively
to is LifeSpeak, a YouTube-esque service that offers more
than 800 videos from renowned experts to help employees with
a wide range of personal issues, from their child being bullied
to marital issues to difficult coworkers. After watching a video,
employees can receive personalized help through web chats and
actions plans.
Elsewhere on the wellness front, Feeling Better Now is an online
tool that helps employees get to the root of their mental health
concerns, while CarePath is a cancer assistance program that gives
employees and their families access to 53,000 medical experts.
In terms of career development, SAP Talk is an employee performance
management approach designed to replace conventional
annual performance reviews. Focusing on individual development
rather than ratings and appraisal and using continuous dialogue
and achievements instead of a single, annual, formal review, it is
proving extremely powerful in helping employees define, shape
and direct their career path.
Each of these programs, along with the many others SAP
Canada introduced, has had an impact in its own way and
ultimately made the company a better place to work. Inspired by
the progress, the company is constantly on the lookout for more
innovative and creative programs, speaking to vendors, listening to
the desires of employees and generally taking a proactive, “always
improving” approach to HR personalization.
Companies might consider taking the view that if their total
rewards strategy is not getting better, it’s getting worse. Employees
expect to be treated as individuals and are increasingly turned off
by a one-size-fits-all approach. Over time, the benefits of personalizing
HR – already linked to increased engagement, decreased
turnover, ability to attract new hires and market competitiveness
– will become ever more apparent. It will soon be recognized as a
key differentiator in whether businesses stay ahead or fall behind
and will play an ever-larger role in the wellbeing and engagement
of employees. n
