work from home one day per week or seek a raise, ask your boss
directly instead of pursuing a competing offer.
■■ Look within for opportunities. Explore internal career moves
or consult your manager to see if there are ways to make
your current job more interesting or challenging before you
■■ Know the potential consequences of accepting a counteroffer.
If you decide to stay, your employer may quickly launch a search
for a replacement and your colleagues may resent you if they
find out you got a raise. In addition, it’s likely the counteroffer
won’t fix the problems that caused you to look for a new job.
EXCLUSION OF POST-65 EMPLOYEE BENEFITS
RULED AS VIOLATION OF CANADIAN CHARTER OF
RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS
A ruling by the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal stated that
exemptions in the Ontario Human Rights Code that permit
employers to exclude post-65 employees from employment bene-fits
were contrary to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
and the usual prohibitions on age discrimination should be
applied. If upheld by the courts, employers could be required to
add employees to their benefits plan or demonstrate that the ter-mination
of benefits for those over 65 is reasonable. Employers
failing to do so will face potential human rights complaints. n
